Quagga/Zebra Mussel
Access to public launch ramps based on availability of trained staff
March 29, 2008: As all of you are aware our community is faced with a serious threat from infestation by the Quagga/Zebra mussel. In an effort to prevent that from occurring the Big Bear Municipal Water District will be having boaters complete a questionnaire form in order to identify boats that pose a risk to the spread of this invasive species in our lake. Should our staff identify a suspect boat, it will be decontaminated using a hot water pressure washer. In order to manage this initiative the District will be restricting access to the public launch ramps based on availability of trained staff. While the East Launch Ramp will open at 6:00 AM on Tuesday April 1st, the West Launch Ramp will remain closed until we have our full complement of summer staff. Boaters will be able to retrieve their boats from the East Ramp after the gates close providing their trailers and tow vehicles are parked at the facility before the gate closes. We ask that everyone recognize the importance of these measures and cooperate. We believe these efforts are a minor inconvenience compared to the protective value they will provide.
